Bigger then Life Size
by Ana Rewacowicz
The Bigger Than Life Size installation examines how
strategies of projecting our fantasies and desires that are used in the
fashion and advertising industries influence our ideas of comfort and
discomfort.
The display consists of two inflatable outfits made entirely from rubber
latex, two pairs of shoe air-pumps, an inflatable couch and a silver change
room. Viewers can try the outfits on, and attach the shoe pumps in order to
inflate them while they walk around the gallery. A record of their
performance (a photograph) was mailed to them if they asked for assistance
in taking the picture and provided a mailing address.
Interactive elements and humour allowed the installation to present the
human body as an art form in a playful and light way, but at the same time
exposed it to physical comfort and/or discomfort.
